Maglite 3D Cell - kept under the bed
Very Strong Rubber Mallet - Safely stored
Cold Steel Marker Pen - Safely stored
CO2 Air Pistol - Safely stored
Gerber Camp Axe - Kept in B.O.B

Kabar Tanto or Gerber LMF II - I havent got either yet - Anyone with any experience of either please let me have your recomendations.

Please note the knife would only leave the house during a major event and would not be carried for any other reason

Pics to follow when I get some free time

Hello

What do/would you use the CO2 pistol for? Is it powerful and accurate enough to kill a rabbit of pigeon at a realistic range? (~20 metres, not point blank)

I have a 2 cell maglite by the bed for powercuts :)

Hi Apache,

Good to see someone else on here! I was beginning to think I was the only one. The Pistol would be able to kill field mice/small birds only. never tried shooting a rabbit as I think it would just hurt it and I wouldnt be able to catch up to it to kill it humanely. As for self defence if anyone pointed it at me i would back off in an instant

Thanks for the reply. I see what you mean about self defence!

The forum is new, and has been quiet of late. The more we post, the more others will join in!

I will continue the line of questioning and ask - why a rubber mallet?

What about the good, old Swiss Army Knife? One never leaves my pocket!

The rubber mallet to me is a great item for self defence as it will cause blunt force trauma. It's unlikely to shatter bones and cause severe injury and for that reason I would feel very at ease in using it against someone that was on my property uninvited and a potential threat to me and my family. Knives are good but messy! If you intend to use a knife your going to get in a lot of trouble with the police. Another negative with a knife us that you have to be very assertive and strike without hesitation. If you hesitate the assailant is given a chance to attack and will probably wrestle the knife from you, leaving you in all sorts of trouble. On top of that I wouldn't like to rely on a Swiss army knife for protection, I would do myself as much harm as the attacker! Saying that I am a big knife fan and will always have some sort of knife on me. I currently carry a skeletool cx with a SAK classic. I also have a champ, an alox farmer, an alox soldier, a Swiss mora, a modified sog s69 eod, a SAK minichamp, an alox bantam & a sog crosscut. I am currently choosing myself a large fixed blade but am undecided between the following-gerber lmf II, kabar tanto or usmc or the becker bk2. Have you any suggestions?

No!

I'm a big fan of butchers knife for big blades. Have an old Victorinox one that is excellent, but I am told that the new ones are not as good.

I have a generic beginners Mora which I heart. A combination of being overly enthusiastic with it and time has blunted the blade now though, and I don't go camping often enough to warrant spending some cash on a decent sharpening kit.

I usually like to think of winter as survivalists-stocking up season, where all the hardcore survivalists bring out the months worth of frozen food and grit salt. Personally I use it to buy all my summer supplies whilst they're on cheap. Soon as the weather picks up I fully intend to start going camping again; I've really wanted to review this cool inline water filter for ages.

You don't need to spend a lot of money to get a sharp knife.

Look on ebay for a cheap diamond sharpening kit.

Kendal Tools and Machinery do diamond sharpening gear for router bits etc. Not big money. You can sharpen a knife with a bit of fine wet and dry paper!

Quick update guys - I've finally chosen my main fixed blade (well for now anyway - pay days 3 days away so I may still change my mind!) it's going to be a Becker BK9. This knife looks awesome. Anyone got one?
